Our food, alkaline or acidic?

Did you know that in 1931 Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel prize for proving that cancer can’t survive in an alkaline, oxygen rich environment but it thrives in an acidic, low oxygen environment?
If you didn’t that’s nothing to be ashamed of since this seem to be something that doctors, medical companies and other authorities doesn’t speak about or frankly put, the don’t want us – you and me – to know. Why? A wild guess with a strong feeling of being right (remember, this is only my opinion) they will not make any money on patients who either die or get well so instead they keep us in the land of in-between. And I feel this goes for a lot more than cancer.

Let’s take a deeper look at the pH and what it is. pH is a logarithmic measurement of how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Technically speaking, the pH of the solution tells the activity of hydrogen ions (chemical symbol for hydrogen: H). The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, where 0 is as acidic as it can get, and 14 is as alkaline as it gets. A pH of 7.0 is completely neutral (pure water has a pH of 7.0).When looking on a pH scale, remember that going from ex 6 to 7 is a really big difference, it’s said that the scale difference between for ex 6 and 7 is 10 times as acidic which makes 5 compared to 7; 100 times more acidic.

During a day we expose our body to many things that is acidic like free radicals, we’ve learned that antioxidants is a good thing to prevent damage from these which is really good since they and up on the alkaline side of the scale. Our body are fantastic in its way to store things that it can use, to keep the blood alkaline it needs minerals and vitamins it has its depots all over the place in our precious creations of bodies and if we don’t fill those depots, our blood goes on a hunt on its own to find it, for example in our bones when it needs calcium. And bones without calcium get weak and we get sick.

So there we stand, wondering how this happened? We’ve followed the food pyramids, eaten meat, bread, fish, pasta and been drinking our milk. Oh, and yes, sometimes we treat ourselves with some cake, chips, candy, sodas, coffee, alcohol etc. it’s quite common that things from the “treats” shows up more than once a day, because “we’re worth it” (I can honestly say that giving me chocolate is the best way to keep me quiet, I love it)

So, what is Alkaline when it comes to food? I’m talking about food that after being processed in our digestive system it leaves behind an alkaline pH. The Net of the food is alkaline, the net is determined partly by the elements in the food – protein, carbohydrate or fat – and by the minerals it contains.

This might be surprising but, Lemon, Lime and Grapefruit is really alkaline and this is because they contain a high level of potassium and calcium. Generally speaking most of all vegetables and root crops are alkaline.

Somewhere in the middle of the scale we find these food groups (more acidic than alkaline tho) Regular dairy products (honestly, stop buying light-products), nuts, legumes (stay away from soy products) and cold pressed and natural fat.

The acidic foods are meat, fish, eggs, cereals, and everything that contains sugar.

My rule is 80/20, I eat from all the scale, yes, even the acidic one once in a while but I also fill up my plate with a lot of things from the alkaline side. No products made from animals and no flour when I can avoid it (which now is 90% of the year) Looking at the eating habits we’ve adopted in the western world makes me feel that maybe it’s time to start being more conscious of what we put on our plates and into our bodies. Processed food, what are all those numbers and ingredients that we’ve never heard of before?

I don’t know how many times people have said, ‘you don’t have anything to worry about, you can eat whatever you want, you won’t gain weight’ when I say no thanks to bread or cream. Sometimes I want to scream that this is not a diet, this is a lifestyle, I’ve chosen this because it makes me feel really good, my body is stronger, my skin is clearer, thoughts are faster, immune system stronger and I sleep better.

I found huge inspiration at a Swedish website run by Åsa Jakobsson www.smartamaten.se I contacted Åsa and got her permission to translate her material into English so that other people can use it. Below you have a pocket-sized guide to help you when you want to buy an alkaline food base.

English: ph guide pocket size 1 you’ll find out how to fold it here: www.pocketmod.com/howto/ (for my dutch speaking friends and readers, there’s a dutch version on it’s way. and well I do live in Amsterdam so it will be at use for me too)
* Update, Dutch version of the food guide: Alkaline guide dutch pocket size see how to fold it via the link above.

My belief is that any illness can be treated with food, though I recommend people who have been diagnosed with diseases to stick with the doctors plan AND combine it with a change in diet to a more alkaline one. If you haven’t yet watched it, I reccomend you to look up the documentary “Forks over Knives” and watch it.

Last but not least. When you buy vegetables and fruits, please chose the organic ones as often as you can. The chemicals used on others are really not made for our bodies to handle.
You are too precious to poison yourself.
